It’s been a big week for music lovers who have been clamoring for fair use laws on digital music to knock the RIAA behemoth off their mob-enforcer pedestal. After all, not every person has the courage to fight back against their bully tactics, and it’s hard to keep up with all the ways they try to double dip the market or set artists up for failure. So how is the tide changing in favor of common sense?
First, Steve Jobs came out recently in favor of discontinuing DRM technology in favor of better fair use practices with digital music. This is huge news, since Apple’s DRM Fair Play system is one of the industry’s music control giants right now via iTunes (the nation’s fastest growing media player, recently surpassing RealPlayer.).
Second, Congress has heard the consumer cry for fair use in music and it’s rallying call against being bullied by the RIAA via lawsuits and threats, and they are answering the call. That’s right, they are introducing legislation to create better fair use laws for consumers. I hope they push it through without a ton of amendments and changes, but I’m sure the RIAA lobbyists are already at work undermining a good thing. What’s even cooler than the legislation itself? It’s a bi-partisan bill. Way to share the sandbox, guys! Of course, the RIAA is already trying to rain on this common sense parade.
Educate yourselves! Be vocal for common sense laws like fair use of digital music. Bullies can’t win unless no one fights back, people.
