It must be the economy. I’m looking for sales help over on Uptown Uncorked to grow the business and free me up to just do the work I need to do instead of dividing my time and attention.

Because it is a commission based position, I expected to get a fair amount of not-as-qualified resumes, and a few not-at-all qualified resumes. People love jobs that have a guaranteed salary these days, and this is definitely an outsourced freelance thing.

What I absolutely did not expect: the sheer volume of resumes received, and the low number of them from people with any sales experience at all. I’ve received well over 1000 resumes, and have painstakingly read them all. Out of the huge stack, the number of people who had ever touched sales in any capacity, from the most basic retail position to a more advanced sales position, totals 14. FOURTEEN.

Is it a sign of the times? Are people so desperate for work they are sending their resume to anything and everything that might earn them money? Or is it the job description itself?

I know a few have balked at the non-compete agreement requirement, but frankly, I’m looking for someone to sell me and my services and those of my company, not to intern for two months and go open their own shop with the knowledge they glean from working with someone who has been doing this for a long time. I don’t expect the person to be a lifer, by any means, but I do expect them to realize that the non-compete is more a convenant to ensure they focus for at least a certain amount of time on what I contract with them for: growing my business with me, than something that says “you can never do this”.

I’m OK with taking the time to find the right fit, but to say I’m a bit surprised at the response pool would be an understatement. What are your thoughts?

The sales help post is on Uptown Uncorked here

So lately I’ve been head down and working. It’s been a busy, busy summer, and I’m so happy about that. The release of the book I co-wrote with Laura Fitton and Michael Gruen, Twitter for Dummies, has also had an impact on my free time. I’ve been doing a lot of book signings and speaking gigs because of it, and I love it.

I hope that I stay this busy for the foreseeable future. Maybe I’m a workaholic, but I just love what I do. Everything about my job, from the writing aspect of it to the social media and speaking aspect of it, keeps me on  my toes. I get to help someone and do something different every. single. day. I’m so lucky.

I’ve got a few things coming up that are fun. I’m planning a big BBQ on the lake in August for my colleagues in SMB, and I’m a sponsor for TechAdventure DC at the end of the month as well. So I’ll be down in Washington, DC at the end of August for a few days meeting friends and colleagues that I feel I already know, thanks to social media.  I’m even staying on one of their couches. I may also get to see my family on a working trip to SC, depending on client approval. That would be nice. :)

I get to be a “judge” for a comedy night in Portsmouth this weekend run by my friend John Herman, which will be fun. I’ll be on a NH children’s radio show tomorrow morning with Uncle Phil. I was on Brand New Show on WPXT Portland last month in Maine, I’m getting interviewed by the NH Telegraph tonight and by Channel 9 WMUR on Monday. I’ll also be on internet radio show Word on the Tweet this Sunday night, and I’ll be one of the judges for the Rails Rumble run by my friend Nick Plante as well coming up.

Add in my clients for Uptown Uncorked and Film Pop!, projects with friends, another new book with Jim Keenan and finishing my speculative fiction novel, and you can see why I haven’t been around much! I’m having so much fun though – I wouldn’t change a thing. I need to work in some down time each week, or I run the risk of being all work and no play (even though to me my work often is my play). I also need to get back into a walking routine – I fell off the wagon.

I fell off the smoking wagon too, having a cigarette here and there, starting after the wrap party for Crooked Lane (client) during which I felt the inebriated need to smoke many, many cigarettes from other people. I’d forgotten what a headache mixing cigarette brands could cause. And no Mom, no lectures, I’ll be quitting (again) soon. Meanwhile, does anyone have a light? ;)

Well, ok, not an “unboxing” a la Endgadget. More like a geeky picture of me geeking out about receiving my review copy of the book I wrote with Laura Fitton and Michael Gruen. A true labor of love, I am reedonkulously happy to see the actual book in print. And reedonkulously is TOO a word.

Want a copy? You can go in to your local bookstore after July 6th, or you can just click here.

come give me your video reply on Seesmic :)

I am a relatively fresh face in social media, and I have big ideas. I’ve been writing about social media behind the scenes for years at blogs like Profy and others, but only recently did I decide turn the advice I’ve been giving for so long into a business, Uptown Uncorked.

All this time, the social media community has been nothing but supportive and generous to me, welcoming me into the community here in Boston and giving me ample opportunity to spread my wings and fly. It is my hope that by joining the interim board at Social Media Club, I’d be able to spend some of my free time giving back.

I see social media as an integral part of our society, and I see the various players on the social media field as a giant team that can lift each other, and our community outside of the social media arena, into the stratosphere. There is so much we can do to bridge the gap between each other, and between social media and our communities – I’m excited for the chance to be part of it.

I’m on a list of stellar social media types, and I’d be honored if any one of us nabbed the nomination. Even so, what I think I bring to the table that some of the social media giants may not is a fresh face, an untapped, uncorrupted point of view. Because I haven’t been as immersed in the lovely cloud of social media alone for the last while, but have also seen the other side of the horizon, I think it will lend a unique point of view to the ideas and projects we generate at the Social Media Club.

I’m looking forward to working more with the amazing people. If you’d like a fresh voice joining the chorus, please go here and vote for me. Poll is open until July 17th, 2008.

Thanks!

As a side note, I was privileged to be a panelist on Aaron Brazell’s show, The Aaron Brazell Show, the other night. I had a blast talking technology and politics with Aaron (who you may know best as Technosailor), Leslie Bradshaw, and Andrew Feinberg We were also joined by S. Dawn Jones, Steve Hodson and Art Lindsey III. If you’d like to read about it and hear the episode, visit this link.

NOTE: I don’t usually cross post to Smoke Rings and Uptown Uncorked, but in the interest of getting the word out about the vote, this post is being posted in its entirety on both Smoke Rings and Coffee Stains (my personal blog) and Uptown Uncorked.

You all may have been wondering what has been keeping me too busy to talk to my friends and relatives and too busy to really go out and play much. The answer: my new company!

That’s right, I started a new company called Uptown Uncorked. We’re doing social media training to help bring people and businesses online using the internet and social media in the best way possible to grow their business or their brand. You can read more about it over on the web site.

Social media and conversation on the web as a tool and a pleasure is a topic I get truly excited about. If you’ve met me in person, I’ve probably tried to get you to Twitter, or FaceBook, or Plurk or carry on a conversation with the world in some other way. I love how the internet brings us all together, and the new business gives me a way to share that enthusiasm with everyone else.

If you go to the site and click on the Leslie tab in the NavBar you can choose your preferred social network to friend me up. Go ahead! I love new interwebby friends!

Meanwhile, I presented the company yesterday at Boston Media Makers, and I’ll be talking about it again tomorrow in Waltham at Tech Tuesday. I hope to be presenting at PodCamp Boston (a short presentation on how to break into the conversation online, how to bust the clique and be a part of the stream). I’ve got a few other speaking engagements on deck, and I can’t wait – this whole thing has been so much fun.

It will probably still be a while before I have time to focus on blogging for fun again, as I’m still writing for hire during all of this. Bear with me – initial company launches always take up a lot of time, but it is time well spent. And for those who ask, yes, we travel, and we also do one on one sessions in DC and Boston. See you on the flip side!

I’ve gotten a few emails from people who don’t really know what I do for a living asking me why I am suddenly a party animal. Well, first of all, I’ve always been a party animal. I am just expending more effort to party with people who are in my niche these days.

What is my niche? I am a freelance writer and editor with a heavy concentration on social media, new media and technology. I cover Web 2.0 and social media for Profy, I cover technology news, Mac news, and Australian tech news for Blorge network and for FreeAccess, and I write marketing material and other content for various technology start ups and related companies under the umbrella of my company, BGWE.

Also, I Tweet as @geechee_girl. A lot. Maybe not @Pistachio “a lot”, and definitely not @Scobleizer “a lot”, but I certainly spend a lot of time talking to people online about this always changing industry we are in as well as music, movies, food, wine, sports, and more. I have several personal blogs, aside from this one, which are often sorely neglected so I can write for clients.

Where you can meet me this month to find out a) what I can do for you as a writer or b) why I am so much fun to party with (wink):

DEMOParty • May 6 (last night – I loved meeting you all!)
Cureoke at KJs in Newmarket • May 10 (come out and sing for a cure)
NH Media Makers at CrackSkulls • May 11
POPSignals in Boston • May 15
IgniteBoston with O’Reilly Media • May 29

I have a new least favorite saying: " it will be OK, you know bad things only happen in 3s."

I call bullshit.  Bad things happen to the power of three, or a multiple of 3, maybe, but not only in threes. Take a look at the last few months, for example. In November I fell and chipped my kneecap, my honey lost an important bid and we had several medium to major issues with the house that were expensive. In December, several of my writing clients and several of honey's construction clients put us off for the holidays, causing a huge financial crunch we are still struggling to get out of the of. So far, we are still in the realm of "normal but frustrating", right?

So then on January 14th I have the accident, breaking my right clavicle,  as I mentioned. This means I lost three weeks of work before finding software to help me, and honey lost three weeks of work, or at least full time work, because I needed him to help me do so much " every day" stuff.  Now I'm a little more mobile, he is back working full-time, and I am able to write at about 80 percent of my normal efficiency. I'm all excited to finalize a project for my client today, an ebook, and what happens? My left handed awkward typing deletes half the book!  This client has already waited through the clavicle break for this project! Not to mention the other client thatt has been waiting on this project to be finished and the bones to be healed for his project!

That isn't all that's happened this week, either. Honey gets a call from his client on Tuesday. This client is also a friend. Honey has been doing some work on his house, including replacement of all of the windows.  There was one window left to install that was so large and heavy honey needed help.  He stored this 400 pound window against the fence, out of the way,  while he waited for a helper. You'll never guess what happened. We got 50 mph gusty winds on Tuesday that blew this 400 pound window into the wife's new car. That means money out of pocket and/or and insurance claim.

Fuck. Me.

I'd just like to say "Hey planet, screw your theory of threes".

So I'm typing this left handed.  This righty's doing everything left handed now, and not by choice.  I slid on black ice and flipped my Xterra.  I am banged up, bruised and sore, not to mention in need of possible surgery for a severe break in my collar bone.  Between the pain, the pain meds, the inability to put my laptop on my lap right now, and the left hand awkwardness, it takes me forever to type anything, a serious issue for a writer with a full deck of clients.  So I did a little surfing and found a solution.  Of course ,it's $200 for this solution, so it's not going to happen Cry

If you want this desk for your recliner needs, just go to Target, or click here.

So, I’m an idiot and a clutz. It’s official.  I injured my self walking today. Who does that, I ask you?  There I was walking from my car to the post office, when the next thing I know *wham*, I’m on the ground.

I had on high heels on the way to a client job (I rarely “dress up”. I work from home in jeans and a t-shirt 9 times out of ten.).  I apparantly stepped into a pile of leaves soggy from the weather we’ve been having.  My entire weight (considerable, I assure you) slammed onto my right knee.  Stars. Birdies. Words to make a sailor blush. Bruises.

I managed to get up, get the mail and drive to the clients in my stick shift. I snagged a bandage and bandaged it up. couldn’t ice it for a while, and it hurt like all hell. Finally I ice it with frozen veggies.  I’ve been keeping it up, bandaged and trying not to move it much or walk on it much for hours. It still hurts. The swelling is minimal, it makes a slight “click” feeling when I move it, but everything seems to be in place.

If it still hurts tomorrow I’ll try to go to a regular doctor, but I hope it is fine. Really, really hope. I have clients all week 16 hours a day trying to clear time for Thanksgiving, books to sort and shelve this weekend, baking to do for hosting Turkey Day here, grocery shopping, a stick shift to drive every day… the list is long.

Gah. Only me, I swear.

Now listening: House, MD

as we get used to our new digs at HostDepartment and our new blog software, WordPress.

I realize our affiliate links are missing, our stats are down and my links are a shambles. I also realize how much I hate this blog design now that I’m seeing it live. So expect all that to change, but most likely not until after Tuesday. Deadlines loom in the writing world.

So comment, let me know any suggestions for a better design, and I’ll see you when I’m done cranking out the corporate word for the corporate pesetas.

Oh! I almost forgot to tell you… I moved my other blog, too. You can find it here. I actually like how that design came out.

I am also working on a series for my American Fiction gig in honor of Banned Books Week. Three of the promised Banned Books Week articles will be posted tonight before bed (psst: for me before bed means around 3 am). Those two blogs should tide you over until I get back!

PS: If anyone can tell me how to make my old blog template that I love so much work in Word Press, which uses a programming language I’ve never played with before and am having to learn as I go, I will buy them a cookie. Maybe even two cookies. Perhaps also a beer.

UPDATED 9/25 TO ADD: The design was driving me so KRAZEE that I just went back to the default theme for now. I’ll work on fixing the craptacular design later this week, for now, please forgive me for cheating and using the default theme. Hey, at least you can read it now…

You know, I am Extremely Cranky in the morning. I am not now, nor have I ever been, a “morning person”. So, real life friends who say things like: “But it is 10 AM! I thought you’d be up by now! How late does [honey] let you sleep in anyway?” when I answer your phone call in a grumpy voice, this is something you should know. In fact, I would say it is key, key to the happy continuation of our real life friendship(s).

Points to remember:

1) I am not a morning person
2) Honey is not a phone person
3) I write and edit, and I do most of it between 10 PM and 2 AM, because that is when I am most relaxed and creative
4) Thus, I sleep later than most people. Duh.
5) Do Not Call Before Noon. Even when honey is home. Per # 2 above, I will be forced to answer the phone to stop that annoying ringing sound. And you will get mad, or have your feelings hurt, because I am grumpy. Because I Am Not A Morning Person!

Acceptable Reasons to Call Before Noon:

1) You can see the bone sticking out of your a) arm, b) leg, c) head, d) other e) all of the above , you feel kind of dizzy looking at it, and it doesn’t hurt yet, but you are pretty sure it will soon, and there is no way you can drive yourself to the ER in that condition, now is there?
2) You need bail
3) Any other extreme circumstance involving massive amounts of injury to your person and/or large numbers of law enforcement or emergency personnel (firemen, EMTs) which require immediate outside assistance
4) You are Ed McMahon, and you have my check

Things I Do Not Want To Hear Before Noon:

1) Any chirpy, falsely happy voice. Go Away.
2) News about your a) kids, b) cat, c) dog, d) bird, e) other. Before noon your kid could shit a diamond the size of Texas in their diaper and I do not want to hear about it. Not even if you give me half the money.
3) Let’s go Rollerblading!
4) Hey man, I’m sooooo hung over. What a party! How about you?
5) Want to go to the Mall? (note: I don’t want to hear this after Noon either. I hate shopping.)
6) Hi! It’s [insert name here]. I’m bored. Want me to come over?
7) Hey, Les, is [honey] there? I keep calling and calling his cell phone and he’s not picking up (hello, moron? He’s At Work. Stop calling. If he wanted to speak with you, he would pick up, no? Try voice mail.)

Oh! And real life friends who keep asking the same lame question? Honey and I don’t “let” each other do anything.

I wrote a fabulous post full of wit and wimsy. Then, after committing the cardinal sin of not clicking on “Save As Draft” first, I tried to Preview it and lost it. Then I cussed in the general direction of the cats and dogs for a minute. They didn’t care – they were too busy getting their nap on. Regardless, here is my best reinactment of said post, from memory. And no, it isn’t live, and it isn’t Memorex – it is the dregs of what my foggy brain can remember from what I wrote. Enjoy!

Reminder: The vote in Congress that can make or break the Internet and Network Neutrality is Monday, May 8th. There is still time to learn about the bill and the issue, sign the petition, and write or call your congressman. For more on the issue, including a short video explaining Network Neutrality, scroll down. I have posted about this several times over the past weeks.

So, previously, I was in the middle of waxing poetic about procrastination when I was so rudely interrupted by my own carelessness. Sheesh. You’d think I’d get out of my own way already. What I was saying was that I was So Happy It Is Friday. This is actually unusual for me. I write and edit from the comfort of my own home, so it is a rare week when I feel the old five-day work week pressure. It happens. Usually I’m a night writer, up until the wee hours, slaving away at my trusty iBook and iMac. Occasionally though, a combination of errands, real life, work duties and appointments will set in that puts me on a hectic weekday work schedule wiith every minute packed. This was definitely one of those weeks.

I had many appointments and many errands, and in between I occupied my self (mainly for purposes of staying awake, but I cleverly disguised it as work) with a variety of tasks I’d been neglecting. I recreated marketing materials, revamped websites (most importantly mine and his, with my creative writing site next on the list), ordered new marketing materials, and filed. Filing may not seem like a huge thing to y’all, but believe me when I say that I let it build up. To skyscraper levels. Filing is the bane of my otherwise content existence. I will do nearly anything to avoid it, until it overtakes the office and I am forced to take care of the ever growing pile.

Which brings me to procrastination, which I am quite good at when it comes to avoiding filing, and which is what I was blogging about when my lurking evil twin took over and anihilated the post I was nearly done writing. Feh. I love to put off filing as long as possible. First, I will catch up on my daily addictions, er, favorite bloggers. Who do I read every day? Well, Amalah (now in three luscious flavors!), Miss Zoot, Rock Star Mommy, Go Fug Yourself, Snarkywood, Aces Full of Links, and so many more. I BlogRoll them, so if you’re curious to see the whole list you can see it on my BlogRoll -> -> )

After I’m done reading and writing blogs, I catch up on my reading. I should catch up on writing my novel, but I go through phases where I’d rather read other novels than continue my own. It’s kind of a creativity recharge – keeps me from getting stuck in my own writing to just put it down once in a while. Once I’m done with all of that, and my clients are taken care of for my business writing and editing, I spend some quality time with my DVR. Oh, how I love my DVR. Whatever did I do without it? Now I can watch American Idol when we get home from socializing and honey can just go to bed, and I still have time to vote. (voteforchrisvoteforchrisvoteforchris /subliminal message) missing House, MD (Hot damn is Hugh Laurie sexy in this role) while watching American Idol? Not to worry, my DVR is on the job. Honey can watch afternoon Red Sox games, and catch Dr Who on the Sci Fi channel. We can both record those movies we’ve been dying to see that seem to only come on at 3 AM (What is that all about anyway? Show the same four movies during the daytime for a week then kick it up a notch when everyone is sleeping and can’t enjoy it? I don’t get that.). For the inventor(s) of DVR technology, I raise my glass. Because dude(s), what a fine idea you had.

So, back to the fact that today is Friday. Thank goodness! I can take a break and so can many of you. Enjoy each other. If you celebrate Cinco De Mayo (aka “tequila for everyone” day at our house), have a great time.

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, ¡Hasta La Vista!

Here I am again, blogging. I thought since I redirected my other blog locations that I no longer use to this one I’d probably better make time to update it.

I have been busy. Not the kind of busy in which you make wads of cash for your work, the kind of busy where you are trying to get your name recognized and increase your marketability for larger markets so that one day you might make wads of cash for your work. So, basically, working for peanuts for three weeks in addition to the clients I already have writing projects for has kept me out of commission.

For those of you who emailed and asked…

Status on me: Slightly lighter, happily, because food is something that takes time. Time is something I do not have. So that’s good, because I wanted to lose the weight anyway….. ;) The plus sides of working so much.

Status on the quitting smoking thing: Mwah Ha Ha Ha Ha >gaspwheezels thing

Status on the honey and furkids: Honey is fantastic, of course, and working his butt off as well (and it’s too bad really, because I kind of like his butt the way it is). The Zoo is also groovy – all dogs, cats and fish accounted for, happy and healthy.

That’s all I’ve got for you right now, as work is screaming for me to return to it. Promise to write a real blog entry next week, really, really.

Giddy with joy, I sort my color coded index cards, which I use to keep track of my writing. Each color means something different. Purple is the color I chose for paid submissions (my favorite color is royal purple – it makes me happy).

Tonight I have pinned up more purple cards than ever before! Oh, Joy! Oh, Rapture! Oh, Fornication!

Three cheers for less contracting out for bookkeeping (yaaaaaaaaawn) and graphic design and more paid writing gigs!

w00t!
