I’m excited that the group project I worked on all winter, Twitter for Dummies, hits stores warehouses next week and stores first week in July (correction from Wiley). I can hardly believe it is finally wrapped, after months of working with awesome co-authors Laura Fitton of Pistachio Consulting and OneForty and Michael Gruen of We Are Nom to bring this major project to your doors.

I didn’t talk much about the book while we were writing it, on purpose. Having three authors plus feedback from Wiley on a project was a fun, sprawling process. Toss in a few “minor” Twitter changes over the course of writing it and you have some added challenging components to the mix.

I am very excited to have the book in stores, finally. We will each be (and in fact, have been) doing some promotion for the book individually and together when possible (we are spread out over three states). If you want to order the book, please feel free to click the link in the side bar, this link here or visit your local book store. If you want to talk to one or all of us about doing events or promotion around the book, you can contact us individually. Find the spearhead for the project, Laura Fitton, @pistachio on Twitter. Find Leslie Poston (me), co-author, @geechee_girl on Twitter, and find Michael Gruen, co-author @gruen on Twitter. You can also drop me an email for promotional activities.

What have we done to promote the book so far? Laura is speaking at Jeff Pulver‘s #140conf today, and has several promotional and speaking events planned around the country. Michael has spoken at the NYC Book Expo recently. I’ve just been filmed for a new TV show in Maine which will air July 1 or thereabouts (most likely on WPXT, but stay tuned), and will also be on another station here in NH soon (project not wrapped yet, will announce here once I can). You can also hear me speak at the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce on June 18th. I also have some blog and print interviews lined up that I will link here as they happen.

Also, many, many thanks to Laura Fitton for wanting me on her co-author team with Michael Gruen. It was a blast to write a whole book about my favorite tool and favorite toy. It was even more fun merging our very different uses into one book to help YOU, the reader. If you look at our Twitter accounts, you can see that you are getting the blended best out of three ways you can use Twitter for yourself and your business – I think that ended up making the book a richer, more comprehensive guide (and proved a point I make often about Twitter use being a la carte).

Enjoy!

Who said tweetups have to be serious? Sure most of them are at night these days and meant for business networking. I say boo to that trend! It’s not that I don’t want to meet and greet and network, but I miss the days of the fun-only, let’s-hang-out tweetup when Twitter first started.

So I thought I’d do a mixed bag – a tweetup that I also talk about off of Twitter. A tweetup just for fun. It’s family friendly, so bring the spouse and kids or grandkids. Heck, bring your neighbor’s kids, I don’t care, just remember to ask first so we don’t see your name in Amber lights. The one thing I don’t want you to bring? Your business card.

You don’t have to sign up, it’s not that official, but because it IS fun to see who else is coming, I did make an Upcoming page for it.

Because I’m on Twitter so much, I also gave it a hashtag: #arcadenh for my other Twitter-using friends.

Won’t you come play with us? Hampton Beach, NH is close to MA and ME, too. Plus, in these tough times, entertainment you can get for the change in your couch or car is the way to go.

Beach. Skee ball. Arcade games. Beach pizza. What’s not to love? You know you want to play!

Over the last few months I have had many, many requests for sharing my knowledge on a variety of subjects. The most often requested topic is kid safety online. Most parents can figure out how to use a computer, even if they aren’t a “techie”, but many don’t know how to find and use the safety features of most web sites, or they rely on things like Net Nanny that cost money and end up blocking the parents as well as the kids, in some cases.

I decided to answer the call and create a class. Well, I started advertising the class everywhere I could, on and offline, and am surprised that the people who asked for it haven’t signed up yet – procrastinators! Regardless, I thought I’d put the information up here on this blog. If you know someone in NH (or parts of MA) who might benefit from this class, it is coming up soon. Help me spread the word?

Update: CLASS POSTPONED

This lunch and learn session is for parents or guardians who want to know how to keep their kids safe on the internet. How much should you watch? How do you recognize signs of trouble? What is the etiquette for being in your child’s “Circle of Friends” without intruding or damaging your relationship? What does an online predator look like? We’ll cover all of this and more over lunch at the beautiful Rick’s Pond View by the water on Route 125 in NH.

Prerequisites: You must have a working knowledge of a computer. Being able to sign up for an online registration like this one without assistance from the kids you want to protect is a pretty good indicator of what you will need to be able to do to keep them safe.

Bring: Just yourself, your appetite and something to take notes with. You can bring your laptop, but a pen and paper will also be enough. Rick’s does have WiFi internet if you want to put some of our techniques in practice after class.

What to expect: We’ll be doing a lunch and learn. This means I’ll be teaching you for the first 30 – 40 minutes of the allotted time. After that we will eat (there will be several tasty choices from a limited menu, included in the price). While we eat, you can follow up with me “one on one” about any question regarding what you learned about keeping your child safe online that you may have after the session.

Who is teaching the lunch and learn?

You may have noticed the distinct lack of posting going on. I’ve been busy. Busy, busy, busy. Busy doing what, you ask?

Well, in addition to speaking, and teaching classes, and writing for regular clients, and training people in social media, and doing bids for business development, and teaching people about wine, I’ve been writing a big book with two co-authors. I’ve been doing this:

And it is almost done for the upcoming print run. Woot! Woot!

I am so excited 2008 is over. You have no idea – what a needlessly difficult year that was. Here’s hoping everyone, every where, has a much better 2009.

In honor of the new year, my next Topics on Fire podcast will be on New Year, New You and has several of the best dressed men in Boston on the panel to help you navigate the waters of looking and feeling and being your best in the coming year. Check it out at 10PM EST on January 4th on TalkShoe.

I was privileged to write a guest post for Aaron Brazell of Technosailor for his Green Tech blogging week. There were so many great guest posters – be sure to go over and check us all out and weigh in on Green Tech issues. My post is on the hidden human cost of government forcing citizens to go green before giving them access to the tools they need to survive the change.

I’m also nervous. I have always wanted to present at SXSW, and this year I finally bit the bullet and submitted a panel idea for SXSW 2009. If you are a member of the SXSW community, and you’d like to hear a panel on “Can Social Media Save The World?” offering concrete solutions to real world problems using social media, please go vote it up. Voting is open until August 29th, 2008.

I was at NH Media Makers on Sunday with some great people talking technology, social media and creativity. I got some handy CSS tips there also – that made my whole week worthwhile.

You can find me on Media Bullseye today writing about the Plaid Nation tour, and i may have some music blogging coming up for a friend’s ezine. I’ll keep you posted. I am also still writing for Blorge every day.

Uptown Uncorked is going strong, and I am spending time on a redesign. If you notice changes throughout the week, like the new static landing page, don’t panic – it’s me. Just let me know if I break anything for you in the process.

I also had a wine tweet up at my house that was a lot of fun – I’ll be putting up a separate post about the various wine consumed and the fabulous people in attendance later today or tomorrow.

I will be in Boston this week at the Technosailor Tweet Up, and possibly one other night. Come say hello if you are in the area.

I have so much to say about politics, the web, social media, my new company, my freelance work, life events, my newly hectic schedule, and all of the current events going on in recent weeks, but I haven’t had time! It’s for a good reason – the company I started, Uptown Uncorked, is growing by leaps and bounds, and we have to focus on that to keep up with it. We don’t want to encounter any Fail Whales of our own because we didn’t pay close attention to scalability, now do we? Meanwhile, here a few drive by comments that will have to tide all of us over for a bit – it is so hard to have so much to say and no time to blog!

First, did you hear about Daily Kos banning Lee Stranahan? What makes this news, and has me fuming (as well as other prominent bloggers, ezines and internet friends like Erin Koteki Vest), is that censorship of this kind is so not a fit with the politics supposedly behind Daily Kos. It almost doesn’t even matter why the ban occurred (he talked about the John Edwards brouhaha) – it’s the fact that they banned him at all that needs addressing. What do you think? Should a site like Daily Kos ban someone who is a very active member, like Lee, for talking about a prominent politician’s rumored affair? Are they angry that he discussed it or angry at the timing in relation to Edward’s wife’s illness – a sensitivity issue rare in politics? Let me know what you think in the comments.

Obama. You all know I am a Libertarian who switched from being a Ron Paul supporter to being an Obama supporter. At first this was going to be an “I’m so angry at Obama” paragraph due to his massive switch on the FISA bill. I am still mad about that, but… then he unveiled his energy plan in Lansing, MI at a speech yesterday. If he can do even half of what he says in it he could stem the tide of economic crisis with millions of new jobs and slow the global warming issue as well. That I can get behind. I still haven’t forgiven him for FISA, but we need a candidate who can get the energy plan done so much that I’m willing to let it go for now. (I m watching the speech in its entirety, embedded below) Meanwhile, bloggers like Erin note that McCain’s staff still doesn’t get it.

Changes in my freelance work have kept me busy also, most notably that I (and the rest of the writing staff) departed Profy last week. I’m sure Profy’s editor in chief will have no trouble finding quality bloggers to replace myself, Triston and Cyndy as we each pursue our own projects, and I wish Profy well as it moves through some significant changes both out front and behind the scenes.

Life has kept me on my toes over the last few weeks with one curve ball after another. I ended up having to refocus my writing business altogether to handle it, saying goodbye to two long term off line writing clients in the process. In tandem with all of these life changes, blogging for sites like Blorge and the new business, I am focusing mainly on web writing for now. In future I may find the time to get back into ebooks and ghostwriting but right now I can’t give it my full attention, and every client deserves a freelancer who can bring their full creativity and attention to a project. If you came here seeking ghostwriting help for online writing such as blogs and web copy, I am still doing that – for offline writing like ebooks and articles I have several writers I can recommend to you – just email me.

In addition to ranting about politics offline, which is nothing new, I’ve been hosting a new Podcast dealing with hot topics in the politics, social media and technology space. It is called Topics on Fire, hosted by TalkShoe and available for download and subscription via iTunes. You can listen periodically on Sundays at 11:00 PM Eastern. Our last two episodes covered the poverty gap as it relates to the internet and social media – there is a recap of Episode 1 here, and you can go to the episode page or iTunes to listen to Episode 2. All future episodes will be recorded, now that I have figured out how and gotten assistance from Erik L. and others. :) (Hey, everyone has to start somewhere)

That’s all I have time for right now, work is screaming my name. I’ll be back to post more this week – there is much more left to say, and I’ve been keeping it all in while I put nose to grindstone.

Went to lunch with some people from PodCamp (@thatjengirl, @limeduck, @nooneyouknow, @chrisabraham and me, @geechee_girl on Twitter) on Sunday at Matt Murphy’s Irish pub in Brookline, got a scenic tour of the Kerry and Dukakis homes from driver Adam Zand on the way. I’m the blonde one in the back cracking jokes about Kitty Dukakis “drinking all the candy”:

(for those that know how camera shy I am, the reason I’m more ok with this video of me is that it only shows my head. HA.)

You all may have been wondering what has been keeping me too busy to talk to my friends and relatives and too busy to really go out and play much. The answer: my new company!

That’s right, I started a new company called Uptown Uncorked. We’re doing social media training to help bring people and businesses online using the internet and social media in the best way possible to grow their business or their brand. You can read more about it over on the web site.

Social media and conversation on the web as a tool and a pleasure is a topic I get truly excited about. If you’ve met me in person, I’ve probably tried to get you to Twitter, or FaceBook, or Plurk or carry on a conversation with the world in some other way. I love how the internet brings us all together, and the new business gives me a way to share that enthusiasm with everyone else.

If you go to the site and click on the Leslie tab in the NavBar you can choose your preferred social network to friend me up. Go ahead! I love new interwebby friends!

Meanwhile, I presented the company yesterday at Boston Media Makers, and I’ll be talking about it again tomorrow in Waltham at Tech Tuesday. I hope to be presenting at PodCamp Boston (a short presentation on how to break into the conversation online, how to bust the clique and be a part of the stream). I’ve got a few other speaking engagements on deck, and I can’t wait – this whole thing has been so much fun.

It will probably still be a while before I have time to focus on blogging for fun again, as I’m still writing for hire during all of this. Bear with me – initial company launches always take up a lot of time, but it is time well spent. And for those who ask, yes, we travel, and we also do one on one sessions in DC and Boston. See you on the flip side!

I know I’ve been sporadic at best for the last few weeks. I’ve been busy with work, and that is a good thing. I’ve also been developing a new business with a friend, and it is almost ready to be unveiled. Stay tuned for that. I’ve also been attending a lot of events, seminars and presentations for work, which are amazingly informative and helpful, but which take up time, so I find myself writing into the wee hours to compensate.

Normally I don’t complain about being awake in the wee hours, since I am a night owl from way back. Even so, lately it feels like work consumes my life. I love my job, but I think I need to work on my work/play balance a bit. Of course, part of the issue is the rising cost of gas and the resulting rise in the cost of food, utilities and other necessities. I’m really pleased gas is finally where it should have been for Americans since 1972 – we’ve been coddled enough, and at great cost. It still requires an adjustment, however. I like to call my adjustment “working my damn ass off”. Heh.

Regardless, I’m around, just too busy to chat for now. I hope to post more details on the company soon, but suffice it to say that if you are a company who wants to know the ins and outs of social media and using it for business and marketing, we’re your team. Details to follow. Social media boot camp, anyone?

If you thought the technology and social media scene in Boston could be a bit clique-ish and insular, you haven’t been in New Hampshire. New Hampshire runs into two main issues: a) there is a large number of people here completely uninterested in or untrusting of technology in general and b) what tech types there are tend to run in closed, clique-ish packs, unwilling to add new blood to the group.

This combination has been extremely frustrating for me as a social media maven and technology junkie who makes a living writing about my passions, working from home on the internet. Enter today’s inaugural NH Media Makers meeting. I tend to run on an 11AM to 4AM schedule, so a 10AM meeting is a bit early for me, but I felt it was worth it to try meeting some people who “get” me and understand what I do.

It was definitely worth it! I got the chance to meet a variety of interesting people, from behind the scenes web developers to in your face interactive television web casters, fellow writers, vloggers and bloggers, movie junkies, internet political revolutionaries and more. I had a blast, and I can’t wait to see who comes to the next meeting. We packed Crackskulls – it was a refreshing way to spend a Sunday morning (and a lot more productive than my usual Sunday morning activity – sleeping).

I took terrible notes and misspelled everyone’s name horribly, which is why I’m being so vague about who was there. John Herman spearheaded the meeting and was in attendance, along with Phil Kliger from UnclePhilms, Bryan White from Cinema Suicide, Georgene Nunn from Random Kitty, Dan Freund, Chris Clarke from GeekForceFive, John Wellington of upcoming film Fox Burnham: Town Vigilante, Jack Herman, Mike Mooney from What Is Joppa, Jason Ruths of RevNH, Roger Goun from Moxy, John Briggs of GravityLand, Nick Plante web developer and Ruby on Rails guru, Andy Fling from BuzzGate, and a few more who were in the back of the room, hiding.

It was definitely a few hours of excellent conversation and some great connections. I’ll be posting here any projects that are born from this, as well as listing the next meeting so that you all can join us. We’re trying to break the insular mold of NH media and technology groups. This definitely means a “more the merrier” approach to things.

I’ve gotten a few emails from people who don’t really know what I do for a living asking me why I am suddenly a party animal. Well, first of all, I’ve always been a party animal. I am just expending more effort to party with people who are in my niche these days.

What is my niche? I am a freelance writer and editor with a heavy concentration on social media, new media and technology. I cover Web 2.0 and social media for Profy, I cover technology news, Mac news, and Australian tech news for Blorge network and for FreeAccess, and I write marketing material and other content for various technology start ups and related companies under the umbrella of my company, BGWE.

Also, I Tweet as @geechee_girl. A lot. Maybe not @Pistachio “a lot”, and definitely not @Scobleizer “a lot”, but I certainly spend a lot of time talking to people online about this always changing industry we are in as well as music, movies, food, wine, sports, and more. I have several personal blogs, aside from this one, which are often sorely neglected so I can write for clients.

Where you can meet me this month to find out a) what I can do for you as a writer or b) why I am so much fun to party with (wink):

DEMOParty • May 6 (last night – I loved meeting you all!)
Cureoke at KJs in Newmarket • May 10 (come out and sing for a cure)
NH Media Makers at CrackSkulls • May 11
POPSignals in Boston • May 15
IgniteBoston with O’Reilly Media • May 29

I am so happy this passed, preventing employers, insurers and others from discriminating against people who are genetically prone to certain health problems.

So if you are in Boston area and you are a geek like me, you can meet me in person at Tech Tuesday this month. Are you going? Assuming I don’t get lost like I usually do, I’ll be there. I just bit the bullet and registered. I’ll be the short, plump, curly haired blonde with the League of Awesomeness laptop bag and Purple Lightening MacBook in tow – I never leave home without it.

UPDATE: I will NOT be attending Tech Tuesday after all. Work and life have conspired to make the hour plus drive each way unfeasible for a gathering this evening. Hopefully next time.

If you never use Starbucks WiFi because of the cost, you’re going to love this tidbit. From Travel Better blog today: Starbucks and its new WiFi provider, AT&T, are making it easier (and cheaper) to get online at their stores.

If you have a Starbucks card and keep it active (meaning using it for coffee or other Starbucks goods once in a while), AT&T is giving you 2 hours of WiFi for free each day. You have to be a Starbucks card holder, and you have to actually use the card – buying a card for $5 just to get the WiFi will work for a while, but eventually you’ll have to use the card or your access will expire (besides, being a freeloader might get the deal pulled, which would suck for everyone else – don’t bogart).

For a frequent Starbucks card user like myself this is excellent news. I am one of those who refuse to pay $20 an hour (the rate for Starbucks WiFi when they had TMobile) to log on when I can go to the sandwich shop down the street and log on for free. I go to Starbucks several times a week for my caffeine fix, and with this in place I will probably spend even more money there on coffee and food and sit a while to write in a different environment than my home office.

Other aspects of the switch from TMobile to AT&T: cheaper WiFi all around. Instead of TMobile’s $6 or more an hour depending on location, AT&T is offering access at $4 for two hours or $20 per month. The monthly price gives you access at all Starbucks locations (nice). Also, if you work at a Starbucks or for Starbucks, you have free access any time at all locations (good perk). If you are a TMobile HotSpot subscriber, you still aren’t left out in the cold. You don’t get the screaming deals or free access, but your connection will still work – TMobile and Starbucks cut a side deal to make sure of that.

Off to reload my card in preparation for some serious coffee drinking and writing this coming week.
